In preparation for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games the West Midlands Combined Authority is providing 6000+ local residents with games-related training to support access to games time roles.

This training could be your first step in a future career whether that will lead to full time work, advancement within the industry or starting your own business. 

The Jobs and Skills Academy is working with the major contractors for the Commonwealth Games to ensure you will have the qualifications they are looking for.

Training courses

FAQs

The cost of the course is fully funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority’s Adult Education Budget and won’t cost you anything.

To qualify for this course, you will need to be:

  • Resident within one of the 7 Local Authorities of the West Midlands Combined Authority, these are: Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton (check your eligibility by using our In My Area page).

 

  • You can also confirm your eligibility by checking with your nearest training organisation and if you live outside of the West Midlands Combined Authority Area you may be eligible for other courses via the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) and the National Careers Service (NCS).

 

  • Aged 19 or above on 31st August 2021.

 

  • Unemployed, in receipt of benefits or earning less than £18,135 per year (you will need to provide evidence of annual salary e.g. last three months’ payslips, Employment Contract, Universal Credit Statements).

 

Please note:

 

  • You can find further information on eligibility by contacting your nearest training organisation

 

  • Some courses may require you to pass a Maths, English or Functional Skills test.
  • Some form of Identification e.g. Passport, Driving License, Citizen/PASS Proof of Age Card.

 

  • Proof of Benefit status (where applicable) e.g. Universal Credit Statement or letter from the Jobcentre.

 

  • Proof of Residency within the West Midlands area e.g. Council Tax letter, Tenancy Agreement, Utility Bill, Bank Statement.

 

  • A full list of acceptable evidence can be found at Proof of identity checklist - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) and we would encourage you to speak with one of our training organisations should you have any queries.
  • You can apply to any of our courses by following the link to your nearest training organisation.

 

  • If you are in receipt of Benefits you can speak with your Work Coach.
  • Please speak to your referring organisation to see what help and support is available with travel costs.

 

  • Where no other support is available, our training organisations may be able to help with travel costs through the AEB Learner Support provisions.

Participation in any of our courses will not affect your entitlement to benefit. Please speak to your Work Coach for further details as they can adjust your attendance and work search requirements whilst you undertake the course.

  • Yes, if you are currently employed you can still undertake the training but your level of income will determine if you are eligible for the course to be fully funded or if you will need to contribute towards the cost. If you earn less than £18,135 per year, the cost of the training will be fully funded. If you earn above this, you will need to contribute.

 

  • Those in employment will need to provide evidence of annual salary e.g. last three months’ payslips, Employment Contract, Universal Credit Statements.

  • Our courses will be running up to the Commonwealth Games in the summer of 2022.
  • The Commonwealth Games will bring thousands of job opportunities to the region and our training opportunities will enable you to take full advantage of these.

 

  • Our courses will provide you with the skills and qualifications necessary to enter work in anyone of the training related sectors. This training could be the first step towards your future career, whether it’s re-skilling, upskilling, gaining full-time work, advancement within the industry or even starting your own business.

Our courses typically last around 10-days but this may vary by delivery method and training organisation. Please follow the links on the course subpages to find your nearest training organisation and to either view full details of their course times or their contact details for more information.
