In response to the Coronavirus crisis, Styvechale and Finham Empower (SaFE) have launched a trusted community network of volunteer buddies. Covering the Styvechale, Finham and Wainbody areas of Coventry, the aim is to build a more connected community by acting with positivity and humanity to help those in need.
The SaFE Buddies work in teams, each led by a Team Coordinator. Almost 200 volunteers have signed up so far to help vulnerable and self-isolating residents with any practical assistance and by running errands. They also provide a telephone befriending service for people feeling socially isolated and in need of a chat.
The SaFE team are also supporting the NHS by collecting donations of toiletries for patients who are unable to get their own toiletries from home. They have also delivered some treats for the hardworking staff at University Hospitals Coventry.
The team have robust procedures in place to make sure they keep their volunteers and their community safe, such as a registration system for Volunteers, personalised ID cards and a volunteer Code of Practice. The SaFE service has been so effective that the team are now working with local councillors and resilience teams to establish the SaFE model in other areas of Coventry.
