Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick has set up a Community Support Network to help the elderly and vulnerable during the coronavirus pandemic.
Every day the Support Network serves meals to 150 households irrespective of caste, creed, colour or faith. As well as a meal this includes fresh fruit, vegetables, milk, bread and all sorts of essentials to keep people going. Members of the Sangat have been donating food supplies to keep the service going.
The dedicated team of volunteers also provide other means of support, including collecting prescriptions for the elderly and vulnerable and delivering them to the patients' homes. They have also launched a befriending service, with volunteers keeping in telephone contact and checking on the well-being of those registered to the service.
This outreach work is a brilliant way of sharing the inspiration of Guru Nanak, who established the Langar community kitchen. This spirit of unity and caring for others is more important than ever.
